I’ve been using the opportunity for cooler weather to curl up on my bed with my crocheting (and a cat or two lol). I have been finishing up my designs and working on a Round Ripple Tree Skirt using this free pattern on Crochetville. I will post photo’s later. I don’t have any taken and uploaded right now.

I was taking a break from working on a design and decided to make a cell phone case for my mom, and this is what I came up with. I made me one to match my iPod Touch case. I hope this works. I am trying to make it open as a PDF. We shall see. I am also going to post the pattern here on my blog as well.

This was made using sport weight yarn. The yarn I used was Hobby Lobby  I Love This Yarn Sportweight in Sweet Mocha Multi. I used only a small ball of leftover yarn from a sock project. It only took me about 1/2 hour to make. This pattern has not been made by anyone else so let me know if you have any problems.

Here is the pattern.

Simple Cell Phone Sleeve

Materials
Sport weight yarn, small amount
Size G & H hooks
Yarn needle
Small, pretty button

Special Stitch
Hdc picot – Ch 3, hdc in 3rd chain from hook, skip next stitch, slip stitch next stitch.

Begin with H hook, chain 9.

NOTE: Work through hump on back of chain; this will make the bottom more stable since you will be working both sides of the base chain.

R1    Work 2 hdc in 2nd chain from hook, work hdc next 6 stitches; in next stitch, work 2 hdc (the second stitch will be counted as the first stitch on the opposite side). Working down opposite side of chain, hdc next 6 stitches. (16 sts)

R2    Switching to G hook, ch 1, hdc same stitch and in each stitch around, join with slip stitch to top of 1st hdc. (16 sts)

R3    Repeat R2 12 times. Do not fasten off.

Border
Work a hdc picot stitch around. Slip stitch to base of 1st stitch. Do not fasten off.

Strap
Ch 31, slip stitch in 1st chain from hook and in each stitch to end. Fold strap in half and attach end to sleeve with a slip stitch. Fasten off, leaving a longer tail. Sew strap end securely and weave end.

Flower
Ch 5, join with slip stitch to form ring. Work hdc picot, except do not skip a stitch. Work a picot in each stitch around, making 5 petals. Slip stitch to base of 1st stitch and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the flower to sleeve.

Finish
Sew flower on cell phone sleeve. Sew button to center of flower. Insert cell phone!

Hi, my name is Sherry and I am an idiot when it comes to math.

There, I’ve said it. It’s out there. Now I can stop hiding this terrible secret.  What’s that? How do I know I’m an idiot at math? Well, I’ll tell you. Somewhere in my hillbilly noggin’ is the belief that I can divide 3 into 59—evenly! No leftovers or remainders or whatever the heck they’re called. In crochet, it’s called a big freakin’ problem, and several trips to the frog pond ‘cause I have to rip it out and start all over at the bleeping beginning!!

Okay, I feel better now that I’ve gotten my confession off my chest. Big, deep breath. Whew. Now I’ll tell you how I discovered my little problem.  I was designing away on a neck warmer for the Holiday Mystery Group , after which I’m not sure what I’ll do with the pattern. Depending on the response, I will most likely post it for sale on Ravelry. Anyway, this lovely neckwarmer is made from a 3-stitch stitch pattern repeat—confusing, huh? Lol. So there I am designing along for a day and half, working on 59 stitches per row. In my defense, things are really stressful at home since my WH got laid off from his job, so my brain is a little addled these days. However, math has always been a problem for me. I WANT to be able to do math, but my brain just can’t take it. Now, tell me to read a book and write a paper, we’re in business! Just don’t make it a math book lol. Anyway, I finished my pattern, making many changes to get it like I want it, leaving my notes looking like someone’s scratch pad. When I typed the pattern up and sent it to my friend Wanda to test, she discovered my little math problem. So I will be revising my pattern for the final (I hope) time before posting for sharing. I’ve been busy working on my designs and have gotten several done. These are for the Holiday Mystery Gifts group on Yahoo, an awesome group of knitters and crocheters from all over the world. It’s one of my favorite groups, and this will be my first year designing for them. I am indeed honored.  Here is a photo of my first design. It is my “It’s Cold Out Winter Set”, which is a hat, scarf, wrist warmers, scarf, and a cowl, all made in double crochet stitch. I’ve also finished a “Scrub A Dub Set”, which is a cloth with matching sponge cover. I’ve been making a couple of other things that I haven’t finished yet. I am very close, though!

One of the things I’ve been working on is the Christmas in July Stockings, in both knit and crochet. Although I can knit, I’ve never done stranded or Intarsia knitting. You can see these stockings on the designer’s website at Sailing Knitter (they are towards the bottom under the July 5, 2010 post). You can also see them on the group homepage at Holiday Mystery Gifts. Terry is an amazing designer, and you can also find her on Ravelry.

Another member of the group, Mindy, designed the crochet pattern. These are all mix it up patterns, but I decided to crochet mine in a simple back post/front post double crochet repeat pattern. I made it in a blue yarn (my youngest DD’s favorite color), then went back and added the fuzzy yarn by what I call “top crocheting”. I’m sure it has a name but at the moment I can’t recall what it is. In knitting you can do duplicate stitch. Since I was using fuzzy yarn I just attached my yarn and single crochet, ch-1, around then moved to the next row.

My mother has a new baby, her name is Kricket. She is a Yorkinese, only a few months old and weighs 2.2 pounds. She has become a great companion to my mom. It is one year ago that my Mom lost her best friend, Glendes, from cancer. She found out she was sick and within a couple of months she was gone. My mother was there for her right up until the end. Here is a photo of her (she REALLY didn’t like the dresses, although she was so darn cute lol). She’s a sweetheart and already an important part of the family.

Time to watch the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Speedway. I consider myself part Hoosier part Volunteer since I’ve spend as much of my life living in Indiana as I have in Tennessee lol. My BIL called us “Hoobillies”.

I am taking a break and leaving it like it is, then I am going to mess with it again, probably tomorrow. I am going to get a hook and some yarn and sit and crochet on the Christmas stocking I’m helping to design. A little yarny zen and contemplation can fix just about anything.

Here is some information about the project, taken from their website:

For Project 8 we will be partnering with The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, the Audubon Nature Institute, and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge to assist them in their efforts in caring for and cleaning oiled marine mammals, mostly dolphins, other marine mammals, birds, and sea turtles. Dolphins are naturally curious and have been swimming toward the oil plumes to investigate… and that curiosity gets them in a lot of trouble against the oil slick.

Even though it doesn’t sound like much, 10 cloths will help make a difference. It took me two afternoons to whip up some simple cloths for this project. I used up my cotton yarn scraps that were just sitting in a basket doing nothing.  I like to think that I might have saved at least one creature affected by this catastrophe.  The cloths can be  made from many types of cotton cut/made into wash or hand towel size cloths, including old t-shirts (with any rough logos/imprints cut out), crochet or knit, cotton sheeting, old towels cut and serged to the right size, plus many more.

These are called Granny Daughter’s or Circles of Hope. You can make them from any weight yarn. For these, I’m using up my scraps of worsted weight yarn (all acrylic). I am making it to cover a footstool that I got from my sister that I really love (so do my cats lol).  Once I’ve made the circles (in the green bowl), then I’m using orange yarn to edge them in single crochet, making them more square like a granny (the pink bowl). I am sewing them together with a slip stitch from the back and they are coming together like this. I am having fun choosing what color to put where. I have some really funky balls of scraps lol.

Now, orange is not a color that I would normally use in this large a quantity. But I’m sure you know how it is when you go to your stash and there’s this one color that just keeps screaming “ Pick me! Pick me!”.  Well, that’s how that orange has been for about two weeks So I finally gave in and said ok, I’ll pick you, and I’m so glad I did. The photo’s here don’t really do the colors justice (I really hope to have a new camera sometime this year), but the orange just makes it so cheerful.

I have many different colors of yarn to make the granny daughters from, so it’s really bright and happy.  I have a feeling when I get it on the foot stool, however, that I won’t get to put my feet up there much. I already have to fight with either a cat for space for my feet, or I’ve had to put all of my crochet stuff on there to make room on my lap for a cat! If you have pets I know you know what I’m talking about.

I’ve also been spending some time working on some more squares for my hex blanket, which I hope to have done very soon. It is so large that it is awkward to work on, so I spread it on my bed and sit there to work on it. Needless to say, I can only work for a while before I have to take a break.  It is going to be so comfy and warm when the weather turns cold!

I have also been looking at some slouch bags patterns for sewing. My youngest daughter’s best friend has been kinda down so I suggested I make her a bag. I have some pink (her fave color) material with heart-skull/crossbones that I used to line a Valentine’s bag for my oldest daughter. There is enough left to make a slouch bag, I just need to get some lining material. We are also planning to put some treats in there before we send it to her.  Maybe that will help cheer her up.

I hope you have a wonderful day & gets lots of fun things done. Today is my Mom’s birthday so I will be calling her in a bit. I plan to go up there in a day or so. My step-father (who’s birthday was Friday) just had cataract surgery on his eyes (one week apart-not both at the same time) and he doesn’t like company when he’s sick or in hospital, etc.

A long time ago my MIL gave me a huge fruit cake tin full of buttons she had “recycled” from clothing over many long years (this was only one of the many tins of buttons she had). I’ve kept them in that tin for a long time but the tin is, alas, starting to deteriorate.  It is probably from the 60′s or 70′s. So I wanted to put my buttons in something that was easier to use and could be prettier, something I could put on display. My WH is one of those people who recycles jars and bowls when we empty them, so when I saw some of the empty ones in the bottom of the hutch I knew that’s what I wanted to use.  These are the first three I made. The covers are crocheted in cotton yarn, which is easy to wash (plus I love the color of the variegated, which is Peaches and Creme and is called Earthtone). Green is my favorite color, of which I had a ball that would coordinate nicely already in my stash, and I was ready to start crocheting. The ribbon was left over from a Christmas project from several years ago.

The photo doesn’t do the colors justice since I’m still using that fishing camera for my photos. The one on the left is a Hershey’s Hot Fudge Ice Cream Topping jar, which I liked the shape of, the center one (I believe) was a jar of olives (I picked it up a rummage for 25 cents) and since I really liked the shape of it I just made a wrap for it, and the jar of the right was a Prego spaghetti jar.  For the tops I made circles and attached with a dab of  hot glue in the centers. I threaded the ribbon  through and tied into a bow, and voila!, recycled jars to hold my recycled buttons.  I intend to sort the buttons by color, one color per jar. I just haven’t made any more jars yet. Too many projects, not enough hands or time!

My daughter’s friend just had another baby girl, Cassidy. I made a round ripple for the oldest, Regan, last year when she was born (she’s almost a year old). I love making round ripple’s. They are so much fun and so fast to do. I made this one in about three evenings (about 10 hours). Luckily I’m a pretty fast crocheter so I can get one done pretty quick. Plus, it’s a simple pattern that turns out so beautiful.

The pattern I used it from AngelCrafts site. The only modification I made was to add a row of single crochet between every color change. I also added what I call a hdc-picot stitch for the border. I am very pleased with how it turned out.  The yarn I used was Caron Simply Soft Baby, which I got at the Dollar Tree for $1.00 a ball. I bought about a dozen balls, and for this afghan I used about 7. I hope the new mom likes it (she liked the last one I made, which you could see if I hadn’t been a dummy and forgot to take a picture).

I’ve also been working on my hex blanket for my bed. I went yesterday to get more of the Old Leaf (it would be my luck they would discontinue it and I wouldn’t have enough!). Sure enough, it was marked down to $1.79 and there was only 4 skeins. I am about 60% done, and I had 1.5 skeins left. I’m really hoping that will be enough. I am going to check back in a few days and see if they have some more. I’m also going to start working on it like crazy to get it done while I still have a chance of getting hold of some if it is being discontinued.

Everyone have a great day. I’ve got to go do some non-crochet stuff–the not so fun stuff   I hope to post more often now that I’m not having to share my PC with my DH (who broke his and then 2 days later broke mine!). If he knows what’s good for him he won’t break anything else for a while lol.

Baby & Smokey

Since I don’t have any craft photos uploaded to share, I will leave you with this. I made this Spiderman Afghan (based on this pattern)  for my youngest, and the day it was finished I spread it on the chair to photograph. Baby and Smokey didn’t even wait for me to take a photo before they were breaking it in.  Got cats?
