Knit Projects

Wow, it’s 2010 already.  Where did the time go?  It seems like it was yesterday that my first child was delivered by emergency cesarean –wait, that was 23 years and some odd months ago.  Sheesh, the time sure does fly when your busy with life and not paying attention!  I sure hope this year goes a little better than last year.  My DH was one of the many to lose his job, so we had to make some changes.  Some were good, some maybe not so good. We will have to see how it all works out in the end.

I’ve already finished a couple of projects for 2010.  The first is a little crochet sweater for my DD’s dog, Kenley.  The picture doesn’t do the color justice. It looks red, but it is actually a deep burgundy.   We’ll see I guess. The pattern I used was one I found on Ravelry called Candy Corn Pet Sweater; her website is DIY Maven. I modified it to have buttons instead of being a “pullover”. I don’t think Kenley would wear it all the time, but only when she goes out and it’s really cold. I will have Rae get a picture of her with it on — if she’ll wear it lol. The project pages on Ravelry show how some have made this for their cats and dogs. My big boy, Smokey, let me try it on him, but his brother Baby said “No way!” and took off lol!

The other thing I finished was a Jayne Cobb hat (knit using this pattern), although in black and pink.  I made a scarf  (Tunisian crochet) to go with it (no pattern–I made it up as I went). They are for Rae’s friend Dee. I hope she likes them.

I sent a round ripple baby afghan I made last year using this pattern in pink and white yarn to Rae’s boyfriend’s sister for her new baby girl. They have two boys, so I imagine they are a little excited about having a girl.  Her name is Molly–very cute name, one of my favorites. I will have to look to see if I have a photo of the afghan. I may not have taken one since I was making some for donation. I hope I did. It was one of my favorite color/yarn combination’s.

I am also working on an exchange that I mailed to India in late October or early November that was never received. I am remaking the item that I put in there, plus a few little extras. I feel bad that it got lost somewhere. This time I’m going to put it in a super envelope or small box.

I hope everyone’s year is getting off to a good start. We are doing what we’ve always done–keep on going even when it’s like walking in quicksand!

Take care & Happy Crafting!

Aka, An, Bird DogI’ve been working on some amigurumi from the book Kooky Crochet by Linda Kopp.  She has a really neat pattern for amigurumi birds.  I made a large one for Kaitlin in red and a smaller one in a ruby red.  For her friend Nicole I made a pink one with black “wings”, but somehow the “bird” evolved into what I now call a “bird dog”.  As you can see from the photo, it developed whiskers and a dog-like nose.  Since it was now a “dog” I didn’t feel the need to make it a nest (removable) like the fist two.  I did add a key-chain fastener so that Nicole could fasten it to her bag or keys like Kaitlin is her small bird (who’s name is An).  She will give it to Nicole this weekend.  That is Baby in the background–I thought he was going to grab them.  He really liked them, especially their fuzzy nests!  The quilts you can see on my daughter’s bed are one’s that I made for her. The one in the front I made for her when she was about 6 or 7 (she’s now almost 20), the black/red one I made a couple of years ago. I’m planning to make her a new one to fit a full-size bed, which we plan on getting her after Christmas.  A twin just isn’t big enough for her and three cats……….

My first knitted sweater project is going very well.  I have the first sleeve done and am about 2/3 of the way through the second sleeve.  I didn’t do a gauge swatch (I know, I know–bad girl!) but when I checked my gauge it was dead on what it should be.  You could’ve knocked me over.  Even with my crochet I never checked gauge.  Of course, I never made sweaters or really anything too clothing-like over the years.  This first knit sweater is for my oldest daughter Rachel, as is my first crocheted jacket/sweater, which is in black and is very simple and just needs assembly and the loop trim added to the sleeves/collar. It’s for going out, while the knit sweater is a hoodie with a pocket for everyday wear. She’s hard on her clothes so I hope it holds up to wear and tear.  I would hate to have to do some repairs shortly after making it.  I will post a pic of the finished sweaters as soon as they are done.  I have tons of other stuff completed but won’t post pics till after Christmas.

Take care and happy crafting!

Christmas will be here before you know it and I’m looking at my To Make list in shock wondering how I’m ever going to make everything on it. But I’ll keep plugging away–or should I say knitting & crocheting away–until everything is complete.  The early stuff for November is at the top of my list, of course, and those items won’t be posted until after Thanksgiving.

Paw Coasters and DishclothThese are for the September exchange in my Simply Crochet group.  My partner once again is Karen, who collects bears, dolls, etc.  Last time we had a toilet tissue cover and I made her a bear head.  In another group (now defunct I believe) she was my partner for a stuffed animal exchange and I made her a teddy bear.  For our current exchange, which was for coasters and a dishcloth, I made her paw coasters in crochet and a paw print dishcloth in knit. I’m pleased with how they turned out.  I used Peaches n Cream for the coasters and I Love This Cotton (Hobby Lobby brand) for the dishcloth.  The dishcloth is actually green–I don’t know why my camera turns everything green to blue like that. Very annoying, but also a good reason for me to petition my DH for a digital camera of my very own to use for my projects. I eventually want to start making and selling items on Etsy so I will need a good camera.  Lol, can you tell I’ve put some thought into this?

In my next life I demand to be allowed to return as a cat.  Here’s some reasons why.

Riley & SmokeySmokey beanbag

Our cats, Baby (the orange one), Smokey (the gray, of course), and Riley (our little tiger girl) just make themselves comfortable any old place. In the first picture Smokey & Riley are taking over my daughter’s bed, in the middle Baby is on my bed wrapped in my soft pink blanket, and Smokey loved the beanbag to death (that stuffing is a royal pain to clean up, btw).  However, there is nothing like going to bed at night and having the cat follow you (Baby) and curl up next to your feet, or curl up on your lap when you’re lying on the couch with a blanket when you don’t feel well (Baby or Smokey–or both!), or going bonkers over the little plastic ball  with the bell inside (Riley), or hiding in the cube and attacking people as they unsuspectingly walk by (Smokey). Got cats?

I notice it has been almost a month since my last post. Even though I’m not one of those bloggers I would like to be (you know, the ones who seem to squeeze in a minute to post everyday), I try to get on here at least once a month.  I did well at first, but now I’ve kinda slowed down.  HOWEVER! that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been busy.  Here are some of the things I’ve been making lately.

Fingerless gloves & garter belt These are some fingerless gloves I crocheted for my daughter Rachel’s friend Billie, who is getting married Saturday. Her colors are black and purple.  I made these with black thread & a purple satin ribbon. For some reason in the photo’s the ribbon wanted to be all shiny and plastic looking. I tried three times and then went with what I had. I really want a new digital camera.  Maybe for my birthday next year.

The pattern for the garter belt was an Annie’s Attic Free Pattern of the Day, which of course changes every day. I can’t find the pattern for the gloves but as soon as I do I will update this post with the link. Anyway, my daughter Kaitlin gScarf for Scotlandraciously modeled the gloves for me.  She’s really good about that (as you can see from this next photo, where she is modeling an exchange scarf I made). This scarf went to Scotland to Mary, who sent me a pink fur scarf that my sister will be drooling over.  I’ve done some other exchanges but mainly I’ve been making Christmas gifts for “Thanksmas”, which is Thanksgiving/Christmas at my mom’s house in Tennessee in November.  We will also be doing Christmas with our oldest daughter, so I need their things to be done by then also.  So I might not be posting–but I am working.

I hope to have some more photo’s by this weekend of non-Christmas projects (since I don’t want my family to see what they are getting on here!).

 Take care & happy crafting!

I haven’t posted anything in a while. I’ve been busy, plus had a little setback with my Anemia. I swear, I’m not gonna have any blood left by the time the doctor’s get through with me! June was my birthday month. I turned 43 on the 20th, my husband John was 45 on the 10th. Sometimes when I really think about it, it’s depressing. Most of the time I don’t think about my age because it really isn’t that important to who I am as a person.

I’ve been crocheting up a storm the last few weeks. I’ve made eight 12″ squares for a charity donation, with more planned as soon as I finish the Little Star afghan I’m making for a baby shower Saturday. I’m using Yarn Bee Baby Bee in Ladybug Ombre & I only have a small ball & the edging to go. I’m also making a couple of baby spa cloth’s, Baby Face & Baby Feet. I’m using Bernat Cotton Tots and Hobby Lobby’s new I Love This Yarn cotton (I’ve never used this, although I love their acrylic–the also have baby/sport weight yarn now, too!). I should have the washcloths done tomorrow & the afghan tonight. I will post some photo’s as soon as it’s done. In the meantime, here is a quick selection of some of the things I’ve made recently:

I haven’t taken photo’s of the 12″ charity squares, a knit Irish Hiking Scarf (my first big cable project!), or a few smaller projects. I will get them taken & uploaded soon.

Happy Crafting!

Both Little StarsThese are some crocheted afghan’s I made for my sister to take to work for baby showers She’s got so many co-workers having babies it’s scary. I made these using Gail E’s superhero Dreamcatcher Afghan pattern (IE Spiderman Round Ripple here). It is based on Beth’s Little Star Afghan, which you can find here. The yarn I used was Bernat’s Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes. The first one was the Melon Stripes colorway and the second is Sunny Stripes. I bought the yarn on clearance at Hobby Lobby a while back and just hadn’t found a project for it yet. I’m sure you can all understand that! Who can pass up a good yarn sale?????????

I also made some knit baby wash cloths using Cotton Tots. The first one is the letter “G” (pattern here) since one of the babies will be named Gabriel. The second cloth is knitted using the Baby Feet pattern from Knitting Knonsense.
Both Baby Washcloths
I am going to take pictures of some KAL’s I’ve finished as soon as I finish the one from today. I haven’t figured out what it is yet but I should be able to tell today since I have the last rows to finish it up.

Happy crafting!

Well, I’m finally getting around to posting about seeing the Yarn Harlot, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee at the Barnes & Noble in Carmel, IN (Indianapolis). You can read her thoughts on Indianapolis here. You will also notice in the photo’s of those who presented Stephanie with washcloths my friend Patti, who made her a Colts cloth (which she finished while we were waiting!). She is the second photo from the left on the top row. Stephanie was on tour promoting her new book, Things I Learned From Knitting (Whether I Wanted To or Not), which you can see on Amazon.

I met Patti on Ravelry in the Indiana Knits group. She lives in Muncie, which is only a few minutes down the road from me. She works right next door to my bank at the Dialysis Center (she’s the boss!!) and we began chatting. She emailed me & asked me if I wanted to go–Duh! of course I said yes even though I’m not that familiar with the Yarn Harlot. I’ve only been knitting a little over a year so I’m still learning all the different levels involved with knitting that go beyond the mechanics of how to knit. Patti also wanted to stop and check out a couple of LYS’s (local yarn shop) on the way. I’ve never been to a “real” yarn shop before so I was thrilled. Needles to say, they lived up to my expectations of yummy, drooly goodness in yarns.

The first one we visited is fairly new in Noblesville, IN, only a year old this month, and is called Always in Stitches. The also offer quilting items–yes, I drooled over those as well since I’m a novice quilter and long-time sewer of clothing & other items. There was a group meeting while we were there & one of the ladies had the most beautiful accent. We think she was Irish–very beautiful, lilting voice. I bought a ball of sock yarn there. It is Cascade Ziggy DK weight in a 100g ball.

The second shop was in Westfield and had TONS of temptation! It was everywhere! It is called Stitches & Scones and they had every kind of yarn you could think of (& in every price range). We must have fondled just about everything (had a good time doing it, too!). Patti spent quite a bit here since she was looking for something to send to her exchange partner in Canada.

Needless to say, we got to the B&N early, about 3:30. The book signing didn’t start until 7:00, with tickets for the signing being handed out at 5:00 (hence our early arrival, plus Patti needed to finish her cloth). There were already other people there so we weren’t the absolute first, thank goodness. They were setting things up and here’s some photos so you can see what they did.

Welcome Harlot

This was posted at the entrance to the kid’s section. Patti & I got a laugh out of this (so did Stephanie). Also, we thought his writing tool (pencil/crayon?) looked more like a knife, especially with the way he is holding it.

Don't frog me!

Someone graciously loaned their sock project for the frog display. Stephanie seemed to like them–took photo’s with the sock. However, we totally befuzzled her when the front half of the crowd did the wave when she came out. Her face turned an interesting shade of red.

Here is the required photo with the sock and one of the crowd behind us in the section we were sitting in.

I have to say that it was very interesting. I didn’t quite know what to expect since I’ve never read her books–although I have perused them at the library. Needless to say, I will be reading more of them now that I know how funny she can be. She’s a fantastic person & I was very glad I went. Photo with sock

Happy crafting (& reading!)
Sherry

I’ve been pretty busy lately. I’ve finished several projects, 2 KAL’s, two star baby afghans, some baby washcloths, a felted bag (which has several steps left but I’ve got it felted–just need to assemble), plus a few small projects.  These are knit & crochet projects, plus I’ve got some sewing projects going.  A tote bag for my sister & sundresses for my daughter’s.  Kaitlin’s will be first, then Rachel’s.  I will post some photo’s in the next few days.  Gotta find the camera first.

Tomorrow The Yarn Harlot, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, will be in Carmel at the Barnes & Noble.  I am going with a friend.  I will also get to go to my first real yarn shop.  I’m excited but anxious, too.  Money is very tight so I can’t spend much, & knowing me I will be sorely tempted to spend money I don’t have (which kinda puts a stop to it since I don’t have it anyway!!!!).  I hope to be able to post some  photos later this week of my visit with the Harlot.  Stay tuned!

I finished my second pair of ankle socks. These are for my daughter Rachel. I used Wool-Ease in #301 White/Multi, which has an iridescent strand running through it that gives it a shine. I then sewed clear pink buttons on the outside of each sock. Pink is her favorite color and she loves hearts. I used the same pattern I’ve been using from Edie Eckman’s booklet. Here’s what they look like.

I’m also getting close to finishing a second pair of Wool-Ease knee highs for my husband. He said that two pair will do him for the next few weeks until warmer weather is really here. That way I will have all summer to work on making more pairs for next winter. I am also getting ready to make some “Foot Thongs” for my oldest daughter, Rachel. She wear flip flops (or thongs) all summer and into fall. She has tons of pairs. I told her about them and she’s excited to see whether she will like them or not. We’ll just have to see.

Happy crafting.

I just finished my first KAL (knit along)! It was a special design by Rachel from Rachel’s Knitting Room & Knits by Rachel to celebrate her Yahoo groups first birthday. Congratulations to Rachel and Happy Birthday! It’s says Love to Knit With My Friends!.

.

.

I’ve also made some other cloths and have finally gotten around to taking photos of them. They are for my mom and sister Sara. I have some others I’m working on but haven’t finished yet. As soon as they are done I will post photos. Mom’s cloth (left), called “M’s and O’s”, found here at a cost of $2.00 (USD).  Sara’s cloth (right), called “I Love U Sis” found here, also at a cost of $2.00 (USD). PLEASE NOTE: I modified the this cloth to make it into a hanging towel instead of a cloth. These patterns were simple to follow and so much fun to make!

Happy crafting!
